DETROIT - Detroit Lions fans counted down the final seconds - as if it was New Years Eve -- when the franchise finished its first Monday night game in a decade. The Motor City is hoping this party doesnt stop any time soon. Matthew Staffords second touchdown pass put Detroit ahead in the third quarter and Jahvid Bests 88-yard run later in the period gave the Lions a double-digit lead in a 24-13 win over the Chicago Bears. "It was electric," Stafford said. "Our fans came out and did an unbelievable job." The Lions did a pretty good job, too. Detroit (5-0) is undefeated through five games for the first time since 1956 -- the year before its last NFL title. Lions coach Jim Schwartz, though, refused to be celebrate, pointing to the teams next game on Sunday at home against the San Francisco 49ers. "Well start on San Fran in about an hour and a half," Schwartz said shortly after midnight. The defending NFC North champion Bears (2-3) are off to their worst start since 2007. They are three games behind Detroit and defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay (5-0) in the division. Detroit and its fans were clearly fired up for the Monday night game. The Lions had their largest crowd at Ford Field and the 67,861 fans created enough noise to rattle the Bears into nine false starts. "It was unbelievable," Stafford said. "Especially early on, some of those third downs, you couldnt hear yourself think." The Bears looked unnerved at times by the raucous crowd. Chicago committed six false start penalties in the first half -- an NFL season-high for a game, according to STATS, LLC. "We were going against a loud crowd, but that isnt an excuse," Chicago coach Lovie Smith said. "Pre-snap penalties kill you." Chicago quieted the fans briefly by taking a 10-7 lead just before halftime and seemed to make them a little nervous by pulling within eight points with 4:07 left to play. Best, though, made them roar again with a 43-yard run that was capped by a horse-collar penalty that gave Detroit the ball at the Chicago 22. He ran for another first down that took time off the clock and set up Jason Hansons 31-yard kick with 1:56 to go to seal the victory. The Lions got some large gains on offence and a lot of solid and subtle ones on defence, holding Chicago to just three points in the second half. "Cant give up the big plays," Smith said. "Their defence made us earn everything. We didnt do the same." Stafford lofted a pass to Calvin Johnson for a 73-yard score -- extending his NFL-record start with nine TD catches in five games -- early in the second quarter. Bests 88-yard run was the second-longest in franchise history, trailing only Bob Hoernschemeyers 96-yard run against the New York Yankees on Nov. 23, 1950. It was 3 yards longer than Barry Sanders longest gain on the ground. Smith was dumbfounded that Best wasnt touched on the run through a hole up the middle and past the secondary. "Hard to swallow," Smith said. "Jahvid Best is a good player, but we cant let that happen." Stafford was 19 of 26 for 219 yards with two TDs, including the go-ahead score to Brandon Pettigrew from 18 yards with 9:55 to go in the third quarter. Best more than doubled his previous career-high with 163 yards rushing on 12 carries. Johnson finished with five catches for 130 yards and for the first time this season, he didnt score twice, but he made an impact as usual against a team that tried to slow him down with double coverage. Matt Forte ran for 116 yards on 22 carries for the Bears. Jay Cutler was 28 of 38 for 249 yards with a TD and no interceptions. "They were getting three, four yards of surge every time and that makes it hard to stay in the pocket," Cutler said. He was sacked three times and was hurried and hit many more times. "Jay was under a lot of pressure," Smith said. "But he kept us in it." Cutlers nine-yard pass to Kellen Davis gave the Bears a three-point lead late in the first half, but it wasnt large enough to hold off the NFLs first team to come back from 20-point deficits in consecutive weeks. Detroit didnt need to rally this time, taking the lead and making enough plays on both sides of the ball to keep it much to the delight of the sports-crazed fans in their state that are buzzing about them, the Tigers along with Michigan and Michigan States ranked football teams. The Lions, who became the NFLs first 0-16 team just three years ago during the leagues worst stretch of futility since World War II, are finally giving their legion of followers something to cheer about. "Some of our guys were on the team, so they know what the citys been through," Best said. "They know what this teams been through. I can definitely feel the sense of how hungry the city is." Buckeyes sophomore forward Jared Sullinger missed the game with back spasms, but that didnt stop Ohio State (8-0), as Deshaun Thomas dropped 11 points to go with five rebounds, while Scott Shannon and Jordan Sibert contributed seven points apiece. BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Ryan Hunter-Reay deftly guided his car around the rain-soaked track, stayed out of trouble and wound up with a much happier ending. Hunter-Reay coasted to his second straight victory at Barber Motorsports Park on Sunday when the rain-shortened IndyCar race finished under caution, with Andretti Autosport teammate Marco Andretti behind him. The win came two weeks after Hunter-Reay touched off what turned into a seven-car pileup with an ill-timed attempt to pass Josef Newgarden at Long Beach to end what had been a dominating performance. "The week after Long Beach was a pretty long one," Hunter-Reay said. "It was one where I just wanted to get back in a racecar as soon as I could. "We knew it would be tough here. When it came to race time, I had the car in the wet, I had the car in the dry. They gave me exactly what I needed. I knew it was going to be close to make it all work out because it was so easy to make a mistake today. Just thrilled. This victory feels real good." A full-course caution came out for the final seven minutes of the timed race after rookie Mikhail Aleshin lost control and went off the track. That left Hunter-Reay unchallenged. Scott Dixon was third, followed by Simon Pagenaud and pole-sitter Will Power, a two-time winner at Barber who had a slight but costly misjudgment on a slippery track in the tight Turn 5. "He was out there cutting the grass," Hunter-Reay said. "I had to take advantage of that. It was so easy to do that today. I almost lost this race three times." There was some slipping and sliding, especially in the minutes after the field switched from the wet tires with several drivers leaving the track. He passed Power on lap 16 when the Australian left the track and skirted by the tire barrier before pulling back on. "I kept creeping my braking point a little bit further and further, and I went too far," Power said. "Its tough to not push past the limits with wet patches everywhere. We really didnt have the pace in the dry anyway, but that sure didnt help our cause when I went off course." The turn is called "Charlottes Web" because of a huge spider sculpture stationed there. "I almost threw it away three or four times there myself," Hunter-Reay said. "It was just tiptoeing around.dddddddddddd It was a very fine line between getting it all right or getting it all wrong. "Any guy thats been in an IndyCar on the Web will tell you thats how it is. Youve got to go up the risk side to the get the reward out of it, but its really easy to throw it all away." Its the 12th career win for Hunter-Reay, who was alone up front during the caution until Andretti pulled even at the finish line to savour the moment with his teammate. He led three times for a total of 40 laps. "Theyve given us great cars here, and a second win in a row for Ryan is awesome," said Andretti, whose radio worked only sporadically down the stretch. Dixon said running a time race was "kind of annoying" and Andretti said it removed some strategy from the formula. They wound up going 69 laps, and Hunter-Reay was up front for the final time starting on No. 52. "The race should be the full distance," Dixon said. "To have to shorten these races for TV, you know, I understand the difficult predicament that everybody is in, but these are championship races. They all pay the same amount of points. "You decide to take 30 laps off them ... I think it changes strategy a lot and youre constantly chasing that window. Then ultimately you finish on a caution, too, which is also a bit of a bummer for the fans. In the future, hopefully we can find a way around that." Drivers were focused on handling the track conditions, not payback from any lingering anger over Long Beach clashes. It ended badly for Aleshin, who walked back to pit road while the rest of the field finished. Earlier Sebastien Bourdais had spun the Russian from behind, leaving him stalled. Bourdais received a drive-through penalty for avoidable contact. The race was a change-up for Dixon, who finished second in each of the first four races at Barber. "We went the wrong way, but it was an interesting day," Dixon said. "Whenever you have a rain delay it sort of puts a strain on everybody trying to figure out what we need to do. "The cars were pretty good. The track suits wet conditions. There were a few troublesome areas with standing water and a few of the guys found those spots. But generally the race went fairly smoothly." ' ' '
